Happy
New Year!
The
GCC-USABDA Board has been hard at work planning a great year of
events for the chapter. We have scheduled our monthly dances
and come up with themes for each month, which will be carried out
in the lessons taught, the music played, and the decor at the
Barn. We hope you look forward to the next year as much as
we do, and that you will enjoy the activities we've planned.
As part of the monthly themes, we will be offering small door
prizes at each dance. If you would like to donate an item (a
bottle of wine, Blockbuster gift card, etc.) to be used as a door
prize, please contact a member of the board.
| Some
of our name tags are missing. If you have forgotten
to return your name tag at the end of a dance, please
bring it with you to the next one. Thanks! |

2nd
Annual Dance Appreciation Day
RM
Dance is sponsoring another dance appreciation workshop on
Saturday, February 9, 2002, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The
event will be held at the Tri-City Leisure Center located on
Dreher Road in West Columbia, off of Highway 1 (behind the old
Wal-Mart, which is now Goody's). An excellent line-up of
dances will be taught. There should be something for
everyone.
As a
preliminary to the day of workshops, dance contests will be held
on Fridays from January 4 through February 1, at the Skyline Club.
The contest entry fee is $5, and prizes will be awarded by RM
Dance and The Promenade Shop. Last Friday's contest was
snowed out, but there will be a Swing/Shag contest Friday, January
12th, a Waltz contest on Friday, January 19th, and a Two Step
contest on Friday, January 24th. Those who pre-register for
the workshop day will receive free T-shirts. For more
information, please contact Ray Mulholland or Teresa Drake.
Report
from the 2002 Intercontinental Dance Sport Festival in Daytona,
Florida
Hello
From Daytona,
Linda
and I are having a blast and, we hope, improving some as well.
The conference (see usabda.org
for more info) has excellent workshops for new and intermediate
dancers and showcases and competitions each night. The
competitions are geared toward the colleges -- there are 37 here
-- but have some events for normal USABDA as well. They have
a social dance each night for those not interested in competing
(seems to be the bulk of the non-college attendees).
The
showcases so far: phenomenal! First Eugene Katsevman and
Maria Manusova. The best amateur Latin couple in the USA
(the world?). Amazing! Tonight -- David Howland and
Vivienne Ramsey -- professionals with beautiful lifts and the
complete package.
Well,
we're taking lots of pictures and notes so we'll have more to
share later.
Best
wishes for '02,
Tim
and Linda Jowers

| Don't
forget! Local dues of $5 are payable in January.
You may also renew your sponsorship or membership at any
dance. Forms are available at the desk. If you
aren't sure when your membership expires, just ask.
And thank you for your continued support! |
A
Teachable Moment
Have
you ever been in a dance lesson and had the instructor use a term
you weren't familiar with, such as "press line" or
"CBMP"? Have you been afraid to ask for an
explanation because you felt like you ought to know the term and
would be embarrassed to admit that you didn't? Well, help is
available. The Ballroom Dancer's Resource has an extensive
glossary of dance terms that will answer your questions.
Visit www.ballroomdancers.com/Learning_Center/Glossary/,
click on the first letter of the word in question, and be
enlightened!
