The Final Episode in the Saga of Your Editor’s Computer: It is with heavy heart that I report to you that the computer could not be resuscitated in spite of repeated attempts. Selected parts were removed and the rest will be donated to the Brookland-Cayce High School Band Fundraiser, a most worthy cause. Thank you for all your inquiries and solicitations. I have purchased a new one and am now in the throes of both agony and ecstasy learning to use it. Nothing is easy, is it?

New Members: A big, hearty welcome to our new members, Abbie Ferrence, Xiu Wu, Brenda Young, Pia Wall, and Betty Holiday. We are happy that you decided to join USABDA. If there is anything we can do to make the time you spend with us more enjoyable, let us know. Welcome aboard!!!

Tablecloths: Many, many thanks to Emma Sharpe for making those great table cloths for our new round tables. They look great and add a touch of class to our dances! Thank you so much.

Congratulations: Congratulations to Sheila and Bob Brown of Columbia’s Ballroom on the arrival of their newly adopted baby boy, Spencer Harlow, born March 18th weighing in at 6 lbs 5 oz. We wish you all the best. Sheila is one of the professional staff at Columbia’s Ballroom.

National Dues: National dues are due, now; don’t let yours lapse. See any Board member about paying them. Membership levels and dues of each are as follows: Social….$25; Ballroom….$35; Adult Dancesport Athletes…$60. All preceding increases were effective April 1, 2003. Junior and Student Dancesport Athletes…$15, effective January 1, 2003.

Etiquette Tip of the Month: Remember that dancing is a “contact sport”, so be nice to be close to.

What Is a Sponsor? Would you like to become one? A sponsor is a member of GCC USABDA who donates $75.00, once a year, to the chapter. In return, you get into all of the Chapter USABDA dances free. This does not include your national dues or your local dues. See any one of the Board members about becoming one. Right now we have ten sponsors: Gerald Camillo, Linda Jowers, Tim Jowers, Pamela Melton, Barbara Kubodera, Kunihara Kubodera, Grace Keller, Karen Roof, Emma Sharpe, and Warren Wintrode,

Publicity Chairperson: We are looking for a publicity Chairperson. If you would like to take this over, contact Mike Verdone, President, GCC USABDA or any Board member.

From The President's Desk:

  • Mike reported that he has purchased several dance CDs to add to our music library: Tango, Waltz, Rumba, Swing, and is donating them to USABDA.

  • He received a survey from the Mayor’s Task Force on the Arts asking for comments or suggestions regarding facilities or other aspects of the arts in the Midlands. He responded , giving several suggestions for changes affecting ballroom dancers, such as larger dressing rooms at The Barn.

  • The 14th Annual Emerald Ball Dancesport Championships will be in LA, April 30th to May 5th.

  • Dance for Life Charity Ball, sponsored by Piedmont, NC USABDA, for the benefit of the American Cancer Society. It will be held on May 10, 2003 from 8-11pm at Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem. Call Mike Verdone for further information.

Workshop on West Coast Swing: Thanks to Teena Marie, of the Ballroom Dance Center in Augusta, GA for a great workshop in West Coast Swing on Saturday, April 5th. Seventeen people availed themselves of the opportunity to learn a new dance or to improve on their current level of competence in an old one. Good workshop , Teena. We enjoyed having you.

The Swap Shop: We have one item on the shelf, this month..…a pair of ladies English-made Gamba dance shoes, size 5½, silver with straps going under the instep. Worn once.

Dance Tapes: We have received one dance tape back this month, leaving fifteen more out. If you have ever borrowed one, please look around one more time. Remember, there is MONEY waiting for you when you turn them in.

USABDA - Sponsored Trip to Russia:

From Jim McCown, Social VP, USABDA (National)

How would you like to be an Ambassador for Ballroom Dancing in a trip to Russia? Would you like to dance the Viennese Waltz on the floor of a grand ballroom? Now is your chance! USABDA, in partnership with Friendship Force, has arranged a trip to Moscow and Ruston-on-Don, November 5th through November 19th.

You will fly out of Kennedy Airport in New York City on November 5th on Finn Air and will be hosted by dance families in Moscow until November 12th. You will then fly to Rostov-on-Don and stay there until November 19th when you will fly back to Moscow and then to Kennedy Airport on Finn Air.

Special programs focusing on ballroom dancing have been planned for the tour, and attending a dance festival in Moscow is sure to be one or the highlights of the trip. The cost is very little, only $1550.00, which includes roundtrip airline flights to Moscow and Rostov-on-Don , airline taxes and ticketing fees, accommodations at hosting homes, and ballroom activities.

You will need to have a passport and you will have to contact the Russian Embassy to get a Visa. Of course, you must be a current member of USABDA. Send $250.00 now, to guarantee your spot as there are only thirty spots available, and they will be taken up quickly. Send your $250.00 now to BP Social Dance, 8143 Yelm Hwy. S.E., Olympia, WA 98513. The balance will need to be paid by July 1, 2003. If for any reason it is necessary to cancel this trip, your money will be refunded by USABDA. For more information, contact Social VP Jim McCown at social-vp@usabda.org, or, Friendship Force chairperson, Marilyn Olen, at castleolen@yahoo.com.

Editor’s Comment: This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have a really exciting dance experience. Russia is an incredible place to visit; to have dancing be a part of that is the crème de la crème of life.
