Paul Lagatore of Columbia's Ballroom gives some added
instruction on dance technique to Joanne and Justine
Griffin following the Foxtrot lesson he gave at the
USABDA dance on April 12th.

New Members and Guests: We had one guest in April, Mark Stiteler. Thank you for joining us at the Azalea Ball, Mark. We look forward to seeing you again, soon. If there is anything we can do to make the time you spend with us more enjoyable, let us know.

Member News : Congratulations are in order for Leslie Kwittken and Don Lybrand who were married on April 27th at the Corley Mill House and Gardens. They met at a USABDA dance at The Barn and ended up getting married. They will soon be back dancing....this time as husband and wife. We wish you a very happy life together. I am sorry that I did not get this message in time to put it in last month's newsletter as they requested.

National Dues: If you had a lapse in memory and let your National dues lapse, no problem. Just see any Board member and they will take care of it for you. Noooooooo! That does not mean that they will pay it for you, merely that they will accept your money and send it in for you.

Etiquette Tip of the Month: Body contact is good....great , in fact!!!..... when it's with your partner. But, it's not so good when it's with another couple on the dance floor. Remember that you and your partner are not the only ones out there dancing, so stay alert for other couples at all times. If a mishap should occur, apologize nicely and keep moving.

Pardon My Omission: Last month in the Newsletter, I inadvertantly left the name of one of our Sponsors off the list. So, here's to that very special lady, Edna Free, who sees the value and the need to be a Sponsor. Remember that a Sponsor is a member of USABDA GCC who donates $75.00, once a year, to the chapter. In return, a sponsor gets into all USABDA GCC dances free. This does not include your national dues or your local dues. See any one of the Board members about becoming one. Right now we have twelve sponsors: Gerald Camillo, Edna Free, Linda Jowers, Tim Jowers, Grace Keller, Barbara Kubodera, Kunihara Kubodera, Pamela Melton, Karen Roof, Emma Sharpe, and Warren Wintrode. And the most recent addition to the list is yours truly, Doris Wood, who became a sponsor last month.

From The President's Desk:

Dance for Life Charity Ball, sponsored by Piedmont, NC USABDA, for the benefit of the American Cancer Society. It will be held on May 10, 2003 from 8-11pm at Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem. Call Mike Verdone for further information.

USABDA GCC SALSA WORKSHOP: Sheila Brown, professional dance instructor at Columbia's Ballroom, will be teaching Salsa at The Barn on June 21st, 2003. Registration is at 11:45 and the workshop will run from noon until 3:30. It will consist of three one-hour segments with short breaks in between. The first hour will be a basic beginner Salsa with each succeeding hour becoming a little more advanced, depending upon the level of the students attending. There will be something for everyone. Sheila is a great teacher and fun to work with, so get your dancing shoes ready and mark your calendar. The cost is Adults $15.00 Students $10.00

The Swap Shop: We have one item on the shelf, this month..…a pair of ladies English-made Gamba dance shoes, size 5˝, silver with straps going under the instep. Worn once.

Dance Tapes: No dance tapes were returned during April, so there are still 15 more hanging around some place. Don't forget, there is money waiting for you when you turn one in.

HOT OFF THE PRESS FROM THE NATIONAL USABDA OFFICE

  • Have you ever taken a cruise? If you have, then you know how much fun and how relaxing they are. Well, last week, I received a message from Jim McCown, Social VP at National, that they have arranged for a dance cruise. Here is the info on it: a dance cruise has been sanctioned by USABDA from October 12 - October 19, 2003. It will leave from Miami, Florida and visit Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and Mexico. The cost of the trip starts at $1000.00 for an inside cabin. A sanctioned cruise by USABDA means that certain criteria must be met. Those criteria include proper amount of dance floors, one qualified dance host per every three single ladies, a program director that keeps you informed daily, workshops, champion dance instructors, great dance music, private lessons will be available, nametags, fun dance competitions, talent shows, and other fun events. You will be on one of the elite cruise ships, the "Norwegian Sun". To sign up, or for more information, call Let's Dance Cruises at 1-800-591-1868. Be a part of this first USABDA-SANCTIONED CRUISE!!!
