Greater Columbia Chapter

August 2006 |
There were 24 people at the July 8th dance and 45 people at the cookout and dance
on July 22nd. This includes instructors and guests. That’s not a very good attendance
for a chapter with close to one hundred members.
August Birthdays: Richard Alexander, Marilyn Brown, Sep Harvin III, John Hsu,
Al Jayne, Barbara Kubodera, Daniel Lowery, Pamela Marshall and Pamela Melton.
Some of the topics discussed at the Board Meeting on July 8th were the cookout on
July 22nd, recruiting new DJs, Fancy Feet Dancers, children at the dances and National
Ballroom Dance Week. The next Board Meeting will be August 12th, 6:30 PM, at The
Barn. Any member in good standing is welcome to attend.
The Fancy Feet Dancers will represent our chapter by performing at Agape At
Harbison on August 19th at 2:00 PM. This will be the 25th performance coordinated
by Barbara Kubodera. It will also be the last event she organizes. We need someone
to assume this responsibility, and Barbara can easily provide all contact information.
Please contact Patricia Hill if you are willing to provide the TLC required to carry
on this outreach effort.
DANCING WITH THE STARS will have two one-hour shows each week this Fall season,
8 pm on ABC. Tuesdays will be the pro/celebrity couples’ competition performances.
Wednesdays will be the “Results Show” with pro exhibitions, background footage,
and the results from voting on performances the night before. It is so exciting to
see ballroom dancing in the spotlight and have people who don’t dance talking about
ballroom dancing.
Dance tip: It is equally permissible for a woman to ask a man to dance as it is
for a man to ask a woman. After your invitation to dance has been accepted, take
your partner’s hand and escort them onto the dance floor. At the end of the dance,
take your partner’s hand, escort them back to their seat and thank them for the
dance.
After a complete year as editor of the newsletter, it seems appropriate to share
a few things. It has been a real learning experience for a computer illiterate,
and I would be remiss if I did not thank Doris Wood and Bob Sitko for their help
and advice. They have both experienced me reaching for the panic button. Thanks
also to everyone who has given a pat on the back. There have been some good
suggestions made and taken, such as listing the board members, DJs and studios.
With your input, negative and positive, the newsletter will improve.
